Tangled-Inspired Recipe for Lemon Glazed Twists with Sugar Flowers

Movie Inspiration

If you are throwing a party in, let’s say, a tower, and are looking for a super easy (I’m talking ready-made frozen dough) yet stunningly sweet treat with a little bit of Disney-inspiration? I’ve got just the thing! Introducing this Tangled-inspired recipe that is perfect for movie night – Lemon Glazed Twists!

This “recipe” is seriously so simple to make. You will still have time to, oh, I don’t know….brush your hair, read a book, paint, play darts, or even knock someone out cold with a frying pan.🍳

Small But Enchanted

One of the most magical spots in the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World is a small area between “It’s A Small World” and “Haunted Mansion.” There are no gift shops or restaurants in this little nook – the only really productive thing there is a restroom (but it is the most enchanting one in all of WDW – tell me I’m wrong!). I realize that doesn’t sound very magical, however this area transports me directly into one of my favorite movies, Tangled. If you get the chance to visit at night, the magic in this area is tenfold simply due to the lanterns.

Lemon Glazed Twists Inspiration

There is a part in the movie where Rapunzel braids her long hair and puts a plethora of different colored flowers in it. Also, if you’ve ever seen the Festival of Fantasy Parade in the Magic Kingdom, her hair is done in the same fashion. The idea for the recipe featured in this post is inspired by Rapunzel’s bright blonde braided locks.

Fabulous Flowers

I had a specific vision in mind when I was brainstorming this recipe idea. I found the perfect edible sugar flower decorations on Etsy. This was the first time I had purchased from this shop, but I definitely would again. (Not a promo, just sharing a great product from a great seller!). There are a lot of other flowers available there as well if you have something else in mind. Click HERE to see the Etsy listing for those adorable little flowers.

I was very worried about the delicate sugar decorations surviving shipping. I’m happy to say they arrived in perfect shape. They were packed so well!

Calling All Lemon Lovers 🍋

The glaze for the top of these sweet braids not only has lemon juice, but lemon zest too! It is the perfect citrusy, sweet treat that you didn’t know you needed!

Tangled-Inspired Lemon Braids

These sweet, soft, citrusy braids are inspired by a certain long-haired princess who was hidden in a tower. They are perfect for brunch, movie night, or an anytime snack!
Course: Dessert

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf Rhodes frozen SWEET dough thawed per package instructions
Lemon Glaze
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp lemon zest
  • juice from 1/2 lemon
  • 1-2 tbsp milk Just enough to create a perfect consistency
  • sugar flowers or decorations of your choice
  • yellow food coloring

Method

  1. Divide the thawed dough into three equal sections.
  2. Take one of the sections and divide it into three equal parts to create the strands of the braid.
  3. Roll out the three sections into 10” long ropes. (Give the dough a quick rest when rolling as it will try to shrink up.)
  4. Pinch the ends of the three strands together gather and gently braid them. Pinch the other end together also.
  5. Repeat the last three steps with the other two sections from the loaf.
  6. Place the three braids on a parchment lined baking sheet.
  7. Bake at 350 for 12-15 minutes, until the bottoms are slightly browned and the tops have a golden hue.
Lemon Glaze
  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, lemon zest, and lemon juice.
  2. The glaze will be thick at this point. Slowly add milk one tablespoon at a time until you have a nice pourable glaze.
  3. Add a few drops of yellow food coloring to your desired shade.
  4. Using a spoon, drizzle the lemon glaze onto the braids once they are cool.
  5. Decorate with sugar flowers while the glaze is wet.
